Playlist: 2013

I’ve been looking forward to writing this post since, oh, about April, and let’s just say that it only got better from there.  This year’s musical representation reflected the richness and the extremes of my experience(s) of the year in general.  This year also covered nearly every genre, although not all will be represented in this list.  Indie rock/pop was especially generous this year, as was Aussie rock, Canadian rock, and older country.

Since regular broadcast radio is a destitute wasteland that has long been without hope for any kind of resurrection, discovering new music requires a little creativity (although not much).  Sources for new music this year included BIRP (indie rock playlist) collections, x92.9 FM out of Calgary (online playlists), Wikipedia and other sites (for lists of Aussie rock artists), movies (especially for some of the more international music), and TV shows (particularly the more acoustic y’allternative genre), and Wiki some more (for lists of albums released this year, so as to stay on top of new releases).  MySpace was surprisingly useful for sampling tracks.

Notably missing from this list are tracks from the goa/trance and ’70s soul/funk genres, in which these genres received a lot of “airplay” at our house but failed to anchor any memorable tracks in my computer’s “2013” music folder.

Not that it’s critical, but I’ll try to list the songs in the approximate order in which I discovered them.

Bring on 2014!
